Crew - Boys Varsity Smith/Alumnae Cups

Event Type: Regular

Date: May 14, 2014

Event Recap:

The Bears traveled back to Lake Waramaug for a mid-week regatta against Taft, Canterbury and host Gunnery. The winner of the 1st boat race at this annual contest goes home with the Smith Cup, named for a long-time Gunnery coach. The trophy adds a bit of flair to a late season regatta that needs no extra incentives; yearly there are huge implications for qualification and seeding for the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championship that come from the results of the races between these four schools.

While the 1st boat didn't secure any hardware for the display case, they represented well and, by beating Canterbury, likely did enough to earn themselves a spot in the NEIRA regatta. At the lower boat levels, Berkshire had a fine showing, winning a majority of the races, some by impressive margins and others with gutsy showings in close races. The Bears will look to see how these results influence the preliminary seedings for NEIRAs and also look to pick up more speed as they end their regular season Saturday 5/17 at Canterbury.
