Tennis - Boys Varsity
Berkshire School has a rich and successful tradition in the game of tennis. Our program, in the past seven years, has finished at or above .500 with a record of 10-1 only three years ago.
The 2013 Berkshire Boys Varsity Tennis Squad put together another successful season in Class B and specifically the SNETL (South New England Tennis League), with an overall record of 9-3. With this performance, the Bears earned one of eight coveted spots in the New England Championships, their third in the past four years. With four returners and some quality additions for next season, the Bears look to be competitive in the league once again.
Every season we work hard to:
- guide our players to achieve individual goals
- teach responsibility and discipline
- model good sportsmanship
- instill a strong work ethic and team attitude.
Playing quality tennis is our focus, and we are looking for players who want to compete, work hard, and do what is necessary for team success. We prepare our players for the next level, which includes working with each player who is interested in playing in college to find a school and program that is a good fit.
We wish the three seniors the best of luck next year in college, especially Captain Hayden Dunham (Hobart College), Captain Jack Benham (University of Colorado at Boulder) and Sam Clougher (Kenyon College).
The program continues to produce quality tennis players. Some recent Berkshire alums have gone on to play tennis for:
Hobart College = Hayden Dunham ‘13
University of Colorado at Boulder = Jack Benham '13
Kenyon College = Sam Clougher ‘13
Roanoke College = Joey Ross '12
Skidmore College = Nik Rhodes '12
University of Colorado at Boulder = David Alper '11
PJ Webb ’15 repeated last year’s performance at the SNETL Championship, only this year winning the #4 Singles Championship. PJ, who won the #5 Championship last year, has yet to lose in SNETL Championship play.
In order to prepare for competition, Coach Bjurlin offers a spring training trip during the March break. For the past four years, the team has traveled to Boca Raton for a week where they played against Boca Prep, St. Andrews School and Spanish River as well as using St. Andrews’ world class facilities. In addition, our players attend the Sony Open where we recently arranged interactions with some of America’s premiere players, including Madison Keys, Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison. It was a great tennis experience for the team and a trip that we enjoy doing each year.
The Bears play a fourteen-game season during the regular season, including two tournaments. We hope these experiences prepare us to compete in our league and become one of the top prep schools in New England.
