Softball - Girls Varsity
The Berkshire softball team has established itself as a strong and continually improving program over the last few years.
The team competes in the Western New England Prep Softball Association (WNEPSA) — founded by former Berkshire softball coach Bill Gulotta — and plays a very competitive schedule against many strong Class A programs including Taft, Westminster and Suffield.
The softball program aims to build good teammates on and off the field, emphasizing sportsmanship, competition and hard work. The coaches look to create an atmosphere of continual improvement, both as a team and within individual players.
In addition, Berkshire's softball field boasts one of the best views in New England, sitting atop a hill on the south side of campus overlooking the mountains. The field was completed in 2007, and two years later in 2009, Berkshire opened a state-of-the-art multipurpose athletic center featuring a weight room, cardio machines, and an outstanding athletic training facility.
The 2013 Bears finished with an impressive 8-2 record with wins against 6 of the 7 Class A teams on their schedule, and were semi-final contenders. The Bears captured the Class B Championship in 2010.
With only two players graduating from the successful 2013 squad, and many young talented players returning, Berkshire looks to be a top team in the league again this year. The 2014 Bears will rely on the experience and leadership of returners Olivia Smith ’14 and 2013 WNEPSA All-League player Francesca Ghi ’14, along with teammates Krissy Govertsen ’15 and Lauren Henman ’14, to lead a talented group of underclassman and newcomers.
