After waiting a week for their next game, the Bears were pumped up and ready to play on Saturday, away against the Greenwich Gators. Berkshire wasted no time—putting up a run in the top of the first with hits from Annie Love ’16, Francesca Ghi ’14, and Caitlin Kiene ’13. In the top of the second, Berkshire put runners on the bases again, but was unable to finish for any runs. With only a one run cushion, Kiene shutdown the Gators at pitcher in the bottom of the second with a strikeout and two putouts at first.
As Kiene continued to tally a strikeout per inning, her team continued to tack on runs. Ghi started off the top of the third with a bomb to centerfield for a homerun, and her teammates Kiene, Lauren Henman ’14 and Kate Klimaszewski ’16 followed suit with strong hits as well to add another run. Greenwich answered back with one in the bottom of the third to put the score at 3-1, despite a great catch by Alli Sugar ’16 in left field and a gun down to second by Ghi at catcher to prevent a steal.
Both teams scored again in the fifth, keeping the game close (4-2) and the Bears nervous. The nerves would last long though. Strings of singles and solid offensive play allowed Berkshire to leave the sixth inning with a comfortable lead of 9-2. The Bears came out on top 10-2 for their first win of the season. They travel to Taft on Wednesday, looking for another.
