Berkshire end of the regular season record: 9-7-1
We entered today's game ranked third in Western New England in unofficial rankings. We knew that winning this game would solidify our position in post-season play, so our goal was to dominate and play our best 60 minutes of the season. After the first whistle all the way through to the end of the first half, we accomplished the first half of our goal. Play was dominated by Berkshire; Emily Czajkowski only had to make two saves.
Sabrina Tattersfield '16 put us on the board first off of a perfectly executed corner play just under six minutes into the game. Sophia Peluso '16 received the ball at the top of the circle, quickly distributed the ball to the left of the cage where Sabrina tipped it in for our first tally. Sophie Perekslis '14 scored her first of three goals on the day off a beautiful pass from Olivia Good '15 at the17:18 mark. Sophie slid in what would eventually be the game winner with 7:25 to play in the half off another corner play where Olivia Good dished the ball down to the right side of the cage for a tip from Sophie. Sophie finished her scoring with 7:25 to play in the first half off of another nice feed from Olivia Good. This goal would put us up 4-0 at the end of the half.
We entered half-time confident, but perhaps a bit too confident. This is was some of the most clean and crisp passing we had played all season, and it was clear we were the better team. However, we did not account for what Pomfret was to provide in the second half. The second half of the game revealed a much different Pomfret team. They were faster, smarter, and took advantage of our over-confidence. They began to play a big ball game that caught our D flat and our midfielders too high. Pomfret scored just over ten minutes into the second half off of a nice rush down the field leaving Pomfret player, Bridget Bohan, wide open, which brought them to within three goals. At the 5:42 mark, off another numbers-up rush, Pomfret scored to bring them within two. This finally lit a fire in our bellies as we knew we had let them into this game. Off yet another corner, Sabrina Tattersfield tipped the ball high into the cage where Pomfret goaltender didn't have a chance of saving it. This goal solidified the win.
Although we didn't play a very sharp second half, I am proud of the way this team took to the field and scored four straight goals in the first half off of beautiful team play. Sophie Perekslis, Sophia Peluso, Olivia Good, and Sandra Stephan had arguable their best games of the year. They each have stepped up their play and are ready to take on post-season play. Our seniors, Maureen McCarthy, Allegra Horstmann, Sophie Perekslis and Ronnie Lortie have been invaluable to this team's success. We are thankful for their leadership and will miss them deeply next year. I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate the JV on an exceptional year. They continue to build a program from which the varsity can draw players. Congratulations to Jackie O"Rourke and Maura MacKenzie for their incredible work with those girls.
Playoff seedings and quarterfinal play will be posted as soon as we get the information.
