The Bears came out to a dazzling start on Wednesday afternoon at Ethel Walker to bring their record to an even .500. From the opening whistle, Berkshire took control of the game, forcing Walkers onto their heels. Chase Gerber opened the scoring only 7:30 into the first half. Holding the post, she knocked in a beautiful reverse sweep off a cross from Jeanne Morin. Only five minutes later, Elle Mattsson lit the lamp for a second time, with Jeanne and Chase getting assists on the play. The rest of the half was marked by Bear domination led by a tenacious Liza Jane Branch, as the Berkshire defensive core of Maureen McCarthy, Sophie Perekslis, Allegra Horstmann, Alli Sugar, Annette Key and Olivia Mason barely let Walkers below the 25 meter line.
The second half continued in the same vein, with Berkshire coming out hard and maintaining possession all over the field. At 13:00, Olivia Good put in her very first field hockey goal off of a set corner play, Gerber and Mattsson each got on the score sheet again with assists. After maintaining possession for most of the half, a cold Berkshire defense was unable to handle an Ethel Walker fast break and they slipped a ball beyond Taylor Sorenson, bringing the score to 4-1 for the Bears. But only a minute later, the barrage continued when Gerber put a beautiful touch on a strong cross from Mattsson. The last goal came from new sophomore Sandra Stephan off of a rebound from a strong shot from Olivia Good.
The Bears look to continue their winning streak when they travel to Greenwich Academy on Saturday afternoon.
