Field Hockey - Girls Varsity
vs. Kent (s)

The Berkshire Varsity Field Hockey team looked sharp in our first effort as a team on our home turf. Scrimmages are a fantastic opportunity to see how players work together, to identify areas of strength and weakness, and to just get a game situation under our belt before we open on Saturday at Deerfield.
It was an absolutely beautiful day to play field hockey. Though quite warm, the girls enjoyed a long warm-up and began the game excited to see what we could do on the field. The ball was in our control for much of the game as our small passing drills paid off. We made some beautiful plays to switch the field, using our Backs for support. A great offensive effort by new players Sandra Stephan '15 and Olivia Good '15. These two are a great addition to the core of our offense. Returners Annie Fraiman '13 and Chase Gerber '13 provided great speed on the offensive line and created nice opportunities as we headed toward the Kent goal. Jeanne Morin '13 was fantastic in her debut as a forward, as she was vital to both goals. The first goal was a beautiful cross from Jeanne to Sandra with just ten minutes left in the first half. Jeanne scored her very first Berkshire field hockey goal twelve minutes into the second half off a practiced pass from Sandra to Jeanne who was waiting at the stroke line to sweep the ball in.
All members of the team played and played well. Other newcomers to make impressive plays on the field were Alli Sugar '16, Annette Key '16, Maureen McCarthy '14, Maddie Bricken '13 and Kira von Steinbergs '13. Olivia Mason '13, captain, returned to her brick wall position at sweep; Allegra Horstmann '14 was outstanding at her role on the back line; Ronnie Lortie '14 has earned a starting position this year and is a solid and confident presence at midfield. Although Sophie Perekslis '14 is recovering from a hand injury, she played strong defense, centering our back line in the first half. And, of course, Taylor Sorenson '13 was a force to be reckoned with as she turned away all seven shots she faced. Although we miss Bella Sinsigalli '13, captain, on the field, she is a vital resource on the sidelines as she offers her observations and suggestions to the team. We look forward to the return of injured Liza Jane Branch '15 soon!
We open with Deerfield on Saturday on their turf at 3:00. Please come out and support if you are in the area!
