Field Hockey - Girls Junior Varsity
|Date:||October 30, 2013|
|Score:||Berkshire 3 - Gunnery 1|
The Bears travelled in the rain to The Gunnery Wednesday to earn a 3-1 win, bringing their season to 8-2-3 as they head into their final game of the season. Ivery Mueller ‘16 played her second game as goalie, making five saves in fifty minutes. Third Former Maddie Beitler reignited her scoring charge with another hat-trick performance.
Having grown more comfortable playing on a grass field in two previous games, Berkshire came out strong with Tatum Boyle ‘16 sending a shot to the Gunnery tender’s pads just two minutes into play. Working together low in the circle, the Bears got on the board early when Beitler scored off her own rebound at 19:15 in the first half. With the backfield comfortably holding the half-field line, midfielders and co-captains Hannah Honan ‘15 and Reilly Kennedy ‘15 worked to put the ball in the circle to create another scoring opportunity. Beitler capitalized again with 13:55 on the clock as she moved the ball from the endline to slug a shot through the net minder’s pads.
In the second half of play, the Bears continued to focus on keeping the ball out of their defensive circle. Despite several penalty corners in the half, Berkshire flier Arwen Neski ‘15 and trailer Maggie Markgraf ‘16 did not allow a shot on goal during a corner. Sweeper Lane Mayher ‘16, who spent large stretches of the game keeping Mueller company deep in the backfield, stopped three separate odd-man rushes, twice sending the ball soaring back up the field to her midfielders. Still eager for my action, Beitler carried the ball through three Gunnery defenders to score her third amidst a crowd in front of the net. Gunnery answered back, catching a relaxed set of Bears off their guard with just 1:43 to play.Berkshire closes out their season on the road Saturday against Westminster.
