vs. Northfield Mount Hermon
|Date:||October 23, 2013|
|Score:||Berkshire 4 - NMH 0|
The Berkshire Bears played their final home game of the season to a 4-0 win over NMH. Captain Hannah Honan ‘15 played her second game in the net to a shutout performance, while forward Maddie Beitler ‘17 led the scoring with her third four-goal game of the season. The Bears allowed only one shot on Honan in the fifty minutes of play, while taking fourteen of their own
Berkshire opened up to a strong start, controlling the ball with good passing. With the play trending towards the NMH net, backs Maggie Markgraf ‘17, Arwen Neski ‘15, and Eliza McKenna ‘16 held their ground to protect the 50 yard line, while stalwart sweeper Lane Mayher ‘16 stepped up to take free-hits, keeping possession in favor of the Bears. Despite several early shots, Berkshire was slow to warm up on the chilly afternoon. Forward Lindsy Dario ‘16 and midfielder Ivey Mueller ‘16 each nearly scored off rebounds before Beitler got the Bears on the board at 10:28 with an assist from Tatum Boyle ‘16. Boyle made a flawless pass flat across the circle and Beitler plugged home a five-hole goal.
Entering the second half, Berkshire midfielders worked to use the width of the field and their four-across line-up to their advantage. Captain Reilly Kennedy ‘15 and Eliza Griffin ‘16 controlled the middle of the field, while Maggie Mori ‘16 and Mueller took care of business on the sidelines. Berkshire nearly had their second tally when Griffin took a huge drive from the top of the circle, but the NMH goalie proved tough as the ball flew high and was batted out of the air. Just minutes later at 13:52, Beitler stole the ball in the circle with her back to the net, and took a quick shot on the pivot to score her second of the day. After the NMH pass-back to restart play, Katherine Frick ‘16, in at midfield rather than her usual defensive position, helped move the ball up the field to Beitler, who expertly maneuvered ball through four NMH players for goal number three at 11:28 . With time winding down, Beitler was hungry for one more, which she earned after a long-hit from Griffin sent the ball to Beitler on the endline. She managed to sneak her off-angle shot past the keeper for the Bears final tally of the day, and her sixteenth of the season.Berkshire plays the final three games of the season on the road, travelling to Loomis, The Gunnery, and Westminster.
