In an exciting return to their home turf, the Berkshire Bears had a stellar game against Williston Northhampton as Eliza Griffin ‘16 continued her scoring mission, and Maddie Beitler ‘17 showed off her stick, and scoring, skills. Giving goalie a try for the day, Katherine Frick ‘16 was called on just three times in fifty minutes of play and kept the Bears in the lead with a huge save right when it mattered most.
With the Bears continuing to develop their four-midi formation, they were caught off guard just fifteen seconds into play as Williston made a quick rush to the net and scored an early goal before Frick had time to get her bearings. It would take nearly the entire half for Berkshire to respond in kind, but after controlling the ball all over the field and giving Frick a chance to rest, stand-out third former Beitler hammered home a shot off a rebound after a toss-up in front of the net to tie the game with 1:48 remaining in the half. The Bears became a bit too comfortable as the clock wound down, and with just four seconds to play Williston took a drive from barely inside the circle to take the lead entering half time.
Disappointed to be down, Green and Gray committed to focus and intensity during their half-time chat, and rushed out to take their starting positions with fire in their eyes. Capitalizing on a penalty corner, Griffin got hold of the ball from Hannah Honan, carried it into the circle, and drove the ball to the back of the net before Williston knew what hit them. Fired up and hungry for a win, the Bears controlled play throughout the final fifteen minutes, leaving Frick and sweeper Lane Mayher ‘16 to chat in the backfield while the midis and backs protected the fifty yard line. Still tied at two and with time running out Beitler hung deep in Williston territory as Eliza McKenna ‘16 moved the ball upfield to Ivey Mueller ‘16, who in turn sent a pass through to forwards Beitler and Lindsy Dario ‘16. Beitler dangled around two Williston backs to put another shot in the net and give the Bears a much needed victory.
It was a thrilling win and the Bears are pumped for a huge home game against Taft on Wednesday. Go Bears!
