The Berkshire Bears fell to 1-2-2 on the road against Hotchkiss with a tight 2-1 loss. Lane Mayher ‘16 stepped into net for the Bears and made two excellent saves to keep the game close. The Bearcats earned both of their tallies in the first half, getting themselves on the board less than three minutes into play after a messy scrum in front of the net. With even play dominating the action throughout the first half, Hotchkiss capitalized on an outside drive that was tipped high for their second and final goal of the day.
Berkshire refocused to start the second half as the team worked through a new mid-field formation and received help from the Varsity squad in the form of Annette Key ‘16 and Jamie Ernst ‘15. With play settled down, midfielder Eliza Griffin ‘16 ripped a shot from the top of the circle and added to her growing list of great goals.
Though unable to find the back of the net again, the Bears enjoyed commanding performances from Arwen Neski ‘15, along with co-captains Hannah Honan ‘15 and Reilly Kennedy ‘15.
Hotchkiss is a perennial obstacle for the small Berkshire JV Field Hockey program, and while both coaches always enjoy a win, they were thrilled with the improvement in Berkshire’s passing and use of open space on the field, as well as the team’s continued enthusiasm throughout a difficult afternoon.
