The Girls' JV Field Hockey team travelled down the Conneticutt to play the perennial powerhouse Greenwich Academy. The girls knew it would be a rough game, but they were ready to face the challenge. A little tired off the bus, the Bears started the first half slowly. Greenwich scored two goals in the first five minutes, but then the girls shook off the cobwebs. The defensive team of Christina Cohen '13, Captain Serena Menges '14, Ivey Mueller '16 and Amy Rowland '15 called for a timeout in order to change the traditional line-up. We pulled one of the midfielders into a fourth defensive position. Arwen Neski '15 was happy to return to defense, a position she played last year. During the first half Berkshire went into the Greenwich goal zone a couple times under the great leadership of Hannah Honan '15, Captain Hattie Waldron '13 and Faye Downes '15. Berkshire held Greenwich at 2-0 for a while but Green and Gold scored third goal at the end of the first half. Addie Bullock '14 had some great saves, one of which whistled by her head.
In the second half, the midfield group, Olivia Smith '14, Reilly Kennedy, Emmi Graebner '14, Michelle Chang '15 and Alexis Rivera '16, did a wonderful job defending the change of play. Unfortunately, in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Greenwich scored three goals. Quickly though, as Berkshire took the start, Faye Downes had a wonderful through pass to Hattie Waldon who flew into the circle and scored on Greenwich-the first goal we have had off Greenwich in the last four years. The Bears were tired in the end and our defensive and midfield were struggling. In the last two minutes, Greenwich scored a final goal. Throughout the game, we depended on the consistency and grittiness of our sweeps, Serena Menges and Christina Cohen. Amy Roland awarded the Player of the Game to Hattie for her epic goal.
