On a sunny and breezy Wednesday afternoon, the Bears took on the Titans of Wilbraham in their first game of the season. Right out of the gates, both teams were full of energy, battling for each 50-50 ball. Less than five minutes into play, the momentum to a positive shift for the Bears when Molly Crabtree '15 ripped a hard shot from the top of the box, placing the ball nicely toward the left side of the Titan goal, putting the Bears on the scoreboard! Just five minutes later the Bears were on the attack once more, and Allie McErlean '14 swiftly moved the ball around the defenders, clearing up space for a straight shot well-placed right into the corner! Goal number two for the bears. As the half wound down, the Titans got some big chances, but the Berkshire defense did a good job keeping them at bay. Anna Heissenbuttel '13 as sweeper, cleaned out any ball that came her way! Likewise, Madison Heilshorn '16 showed her courage by stepping up to challenge any ball that came her way. But a surge of vigor spread through the Titans, who scored two in the last five minutes of the half, making it 2-2 at intermission. Lauren Henman '14, in goal for the Bears, make a series of phenomenal plays when Wilbraham had the ball in point-blank range of the Berkshire cage. Henman had six great saves for the half, and exchanged positions with Kylie Wilkes '16 for the second.
Unsatisfied with a tie game, the girls made a clear effort to start the second half better than they ended the first. The passing was outstanding for the Bears, leading to the third goal of the game just 3 minutes into the half. Tenacious Hallie Mather '15 finessed a nice pass to Crabtree in the middle, who popped it up to McErlean. McErlean found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Titan keeper, and tapped the ball to the right of the incoming goalie, giving McErlean a tap-in chance that she capitalized on! Before the midway point of the second half, Taylor Willi '16 kicked a soaring ball from her stopper position, placing it perfectly at the feat of McErlean, who put it away for a hattrick! Veterans Lucia Perkins '14 and Eloise Morrow '14 hustled as they always do, ensuring that defense was a priority. No goals were scored again until the clock ticked down to 2:30 in the game, when McErlean in the corner, this time found Crabtree in prime scoring position, and Crabtree was able to put the finishing touch on it! While the Titans scored another with less than a minute to play, the Bears' defense was solid, including some fantastic saves by Wilkes, who had 8 saves in the half. A great 5-3 win for the Bears! They face IMS on Friday at home.
