Soccer - Boys Junior Varsity vs. Avon Old Farms School

Event Type: Regular

Date: November 6, 2013

Event Recap:
It's been evident from day one that this team is capable of great soccer.  Our execution, however, hasn't always been consistent.  As the days get shorter and the weather colder, it can be challenging to stay focused on the final games of the season.  It looked like this might be the case in the first 30 minutes of our match against Avon on Wednesday.  We were slow challenging for 50-50 balls, hesitant to hit passes with conviction, and reacted to plays as opposed to anticipating them.  Because of this Avon was able to string together some great combination plays through our midfield and down the flanks.  One of these plays resulted in a goal.  Whether that was the impetus we needed or not, the Bears found a new gear with ten minutes remaining in the half and began to pressure Avon more effectively as an entire team.  Midfielder Pete Warsinske '14 played a great ball to wingback Henry Manley '15 who made a good run down the wing.  He dumped it off to winger Rawson Clough '17 who was able to unleash a good cross just out of striker Juan Cedeno's 17 reach.  Second's later striker Chris Zaffanella '15 anticipated a long ball and had a one-on-one with the keeper but Avon's goalie did a good job closing down the angles and grabbing the ball from Chris's feet.  The Bears entered half time down 1-0 but with some momentum.

The change of sides for the second half meant the Bears had a strong wind at their back and with more confidence, better communication, and some great teamwork, the Bears began to increase possession.  Despite some great runs down the wings and some good over the top balls, Berkshire was unable to catch the keeper sleeping.  It looked as though we might finish the game with another 1 - 0 loss despite our great opportunities.  And then the incredible happened...the Bears aggressive play started to generate gaps in Avon's defense.  With 10 minutes remaining, Zaffanella drove a sharp cross from the corner flag through the Avon defense to striker  Zachariah Buteux '16.  Buteux calmly volleyed the ball past an outstretched keeper to tie the game.  Four minutes later, in a very similar play, winger Jared Renzi '16 hit a fantastic cross that looked to be too long.  Winger Josiah Tolvo came streaking in from out wide and one-timed his shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.  The team was euphoric with the bench jumping on the sideline cheering Josiah on.  It was an incredible end to a fantastic game of soccer.  Much like the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, today's game required contributions from every member of our team and the realization that everyone played an integral role in the team's success.  We are sad to lose co-captain Alden Boldt '14, Jared Renzi '16, and Hunter Reynolds '16 for our final game of the season.  Thanks to everyone who came out to support the team.
