The Bears' annual opener against Cheshire showcased the strength of Berkshire’s soccer program and featured strong performances from both returners and new additions to the team. Led by captains Pete Warsinske ’13 and Alden Boldt ’13, the Bears started the first half well with effective distribution to the wings and good constant pressure on Cheshire’s defense. Within the first ten minutes, striker Zack Buteux ’16 received a ball just off the six from winger Jared Renzi ’16. Zack’s shot went bar down for the first goal of the season. Minutes later Zack fed a ball to winger Chris Zaffanella ’16 who slid the ball past the keeper to open a 2-0 lead. Berkshire’s wingers did a good job of passing the ball back and using our strong defensive core to switch field. Striker Juan Cedeno ’17 made some great runs checking to the ball and as a result was able to sneak past a defender on a breakaway. He put the Bears up 3-0. The Bears continued to apply pressure and added goals from winger Duncan Anderson ’17, one more from Juan, and both Zack and Chris finished the day with hat tricks. The Bears had some strong defensive moments. When Cheshire did break through, keepers Liam Thor ’17 and Henry Thomas ’16 both made some good stops to keep a clean sheet. It was a good beginning to the season and provided some good fodder for the team to work on this week as we prepare for Hotchkiss on Wednesday.
