The Bears traveled played on the Stewart pitch today, confident that they were going to do well in the match in front of parents and friends, and they certainly did. Since early in the game the forward line was able to receive and control the ball in front of the home goal and the opportunities began to present themselves, but we could not finish. We attempted more shots on goal in this game than in any other previous game this season, but our lack of accuracy, together with the good performance of the Canterbury goalie, frustrated our hopes for an early goal. After thirty minutes of play it seemed as if we were going to go to half time empty handed, but finally Christopher Zaffanella’ 15 ran through the visitor’s defense to control a ball sent perfectly into the space by Hunter Borwick’ 16 and scored the much awaited first goal for Berkshire.
The second half saw a more effective Berkshire team. Daniel Driscoll’ 15 helped with the opening goal by sending a through ball to Samuel Merritt’ 14 who managed to put it in the net not without some difficulty. Only seven minutes had elapsed since the start, and right after that Gerardo Giménez-Valdés’ 15 took an incredible high shot from almost half field that caught the goalie by surprise, going over his hands and inside the net. After that the Bears had many more opportunities that were not realized. Canterbury players threatened our back on several occasions, but our defensive line held them at ba,y thanks in part to the great effort of James Funderburg’ 14 who played with confidence and composure. Great game to wrap up a great Parents Weekend.
