Event Type: Regular

Date: November 9, 2013

Score:Berkshire 3 Wilbraham & Monson 1 (25-18; 25-13; 19-25; 25-17)

Event Recap:

The Bears concluded the regular season with an intense match against the Titans of Wilbraham and Monson Academy that secured the Berkshire squad a spot in the 2013 Class B New England Tournament. The fourth-seeded Bears will host the fifth-seeded Dragons of Dana Hall School on Wednesday, November 13. (The time is to be determined.)

Momentum, as usual, was the key word for the day. In set one, the Titans took an early 9-4 lead but saw the Bears reduce their advantage to one at 9-8. Tough serving by Katie Stonecipher ’15 and Krissy Goversten ’15, as well as timely kills by Katie and Michaelann “the Jamaican Wonder” Denton ‘14, allowed Berkshire to keep the score close and to even lead at 16-15. With the Bears down 17-18, a kill by Emily Barclay ’15 tied the score once again and brought Annie Love ’16 to the service line. Seven serves later, the Bears had 25-18 victory. In addition to Annie’s three aces, the run was highlighted by kills by Katie (2) and Samone DeFreese’16.

Set two belonged to the Bears. With our passing on target, Elif ran an effective attack, and serving remained sharp. With the score 7-5 in our favor, a scoring run highlighted by Katie’s five aces pushed our advantage to nine at 14-5. With Elif putting up nice sets, we shifted scoring to our attack as we moved through the second service rotation. Emily, Michaelann, Greta Dorsey ’14, Katie (2), and Samone (4) provided kills as we reached set point. Annie closed out our 25-13 win with an ace.

Set three involved the Bears relaxing and the Titans pushing to keep their playoff hope alive. A mixture of Bear hitting errors and positive points by the Titans enabled WMA to go ahead 15-9 at the end of the first serving rotation and lead 20-14 toward the end of the second. Three service points, including two aces, by Katie cut the deficit to three at 17-20; however, a net violation ended our run. Subsequently, the Titans took set three 25-19.

With “Mo” clearly on their side of the net, the Titans jumped out to a 10-2 advantage to start set four. A scoring run sparked by the service of Samone allowed us to cut into the deficit and to trail by four at 6-10. Kills by Emily (2) and Katie, as well as another ace by Katie, helped us to further reduce the gap so that we trailed by two at 11-13. Although a service error presented the Titans with their fourteenth point, a kill by Michaelann brought the service to Elif. With Elif keeping the Titans off balance with her serve (2 aces) and with Samone taking control at the net (2 blocks and 3 kills), we pushed ahead 19-14. Down the stretch, kills by Samone and Emily and errors by the Titans brought us to match point at 24-17. Annie, who had an excellent day at the service line, ended the match with a service point.

The win helped extend our season, and it has been a pleasure to see the emotional growth, skill development, and beautiful play by our players. We especially thank our four seniors (Elif Kesaf, Greta Dorsey, Sassy Cosman-Connery and Michaelann Denton) for their sweat, tears, and good cheer. We will miss them and wish them success as their time in the shadow of the Dome draws to an end. Moose and Bear, by the way, both went to TEAM. We again thank our families and friends for their support.
