Event Type: Regular

Date: September 28, 2013

Score:Berkshire 3 - Miss Hall's 0 (25-10; 25-9; 25-8)

Event Recap:

On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, the Berkshire Bears prevailed over the Hurricanes of Miss Hall’s School 3-0 (25-10; 25-9; 25-8). Playing with a slightly altered line up, the Bears broke out to leads of 10-2 and 13-6 behind good serving from Katie Stonecipher ’15, Emily Barclay ’15, and Elif Kesaf ’14 as well as nicely placed hits by Sassy Cosman-Connery ’14 and Greta Dorsey ’14. The Hurricanes rallied to cut our advantage to three points at 13-10. Taking advantage of a Hurricane hitting error, Annie Love ’16 strung together eleven consecutive serves. Due to Annie’s six aces, a couple of errors by Miss Hall’s, and a kill by Katie, the Bears took the first set 25-10.

The second set saw the Bears once again forge a lead due to solid serving, including that of Krissy Goversten ’15, and an effective attack directed by Elif. With four players (Emily, Greta, Katie, and Sassy) producing kills, the Bears led 12-7 when Annie took her place at the service line. Although her serves did not produce any aces, they kept Miss Hall’s off balance which enabled us to extend our lead to 17-8 as the second service rotation began. Following an ace from Katie and a Hurricane kill that made the score 19-9, Emily Barclay put down a kill and three service points (2 aces) while Greta and Sassy each added a kill. The result was a 25-9 Bear win in set two.

With Katie serving to start set three, the Bears earned a 4-0 lead due to her three aces and a kill by Emily. Although the Hurricanes gained the next two points, a kill by Katie brought Emily to the service line. Emily’s two service points, a Hurricane setting error, and a kill by Greta pushed our lead to 10-3. The teams then engaged in a series of exchanges with the Bears swapping one point for two. Michaelann Denton ’14 and Marlene Moser ’17 supplied aces while Emily and Mary Ward ’15 patrolled the net and Katie hammered sets from the outside. Leading 20-8, Emily B. embarked on another service run. Her two service points were bracketed by kills from Sassy and Greta. Greta then closed out the set (25-8) and the match with a kill.

Once the squad adjusted to the revised line up, it worked well together and played hard to the last point. Although everyone contributed to the win, Greta Dorsey did a very nice job filling in at middle. In addition, Emil “The Voice” Barclay was solid at both the net and the service line. Because of her effort and spirit, despite being “silenced” by laryngitis, Emily once again earned Moose. Eli and Morgan Handwerker ’15 ran the attack well, and Katie received Moose. Katie was everywhere on the court today, and her passes were on target. Finally, she served and hit quite well.

The team will return to action against Northfield Mount Hermon School on Wednesday, October 2 at home. We want to thank our fans for their cheers as well as the post-match treats.
