Event Recap:(12-25; 23-25; 22-25)
With both squads just returned from their respective Parents’ Weekend breaks, the Bears and the Bearcats of Hotchkiss played a ragged match on the Duryee Varsity Court. Although the Bears became more engaged after the first set, the Bearcats headed back south on Route 41 with a 3-0 win.
The match started slowly for the Bears as Hotchkiss quickly took a 15-4 lead in set one. Although Nicole Martinez ’16 served well and Katie Moffett ’13 had a couple of kills, Hotchkiss took set one 25-12.
In set two, the Bears responded to each Bearcat scoring run. With the Bears getting good serves from Eliza Berg ’13, Krissy Goversten ’15, and Nicole as well as fine net play from Maddy Maher ’13 and Samone Defreese ’15, Berkshire held a 13-10 advantage at the start of the second service rotation. Caitlin Kiene ’13 and Katie Moffett supplied kills as the Bearcats cut into our lead. With Hotchkiss leading 17-16, Maddy Maher put down a kill and Caitlin provided two good serves as Berkshire went in front again 19-17. Kills from Em Barclay ’15 and Katie Stonecipher ’15 and a service point from Nicole had the Bears in front 23-21 at the end of the second service rotation. A kill then returned the serve to the Bearcats, who closed out the set 25-23.
Set three saw the Bears use the hitting and serving of Caitlin, the hitting of Katie Moffett, and the serving of Elif Kesaf ’14 to rally after the Bearcats took an early lead. Em Barclay then sandwiched two kills around an ace from Krissy as the Bears led 12-11. Hotchkiss rallied to lead 13-12 and the two squads embarked upon a series of side outs and short scoring runs. The hitting of Samone (2 kills), Caitlin (2 kills), and Maddy (2 kills) kept us in the match at this point. In fact, the Bears tied the set at 22-22 to start the third service rotation. As in set two, the Bearcats regained the serve to close out the set and the match with a 25-22 win.
Although the Bearcats came away with the victory, the Bears played with vigor after the first set. Although several players played well, for example Caitlin and Maddy, Bear went to Katie Stonecipher, who covered the court- especially in the back row- well. Eliza garnered Moose for hustle and enthusiasm today. We want to thank our fans for their support and the Kienes for the post-match treats. The Bears have two days to prepare for the trek south to take on the Gators of Greenwich Academy on ACT Day, Saturday, Oct. 27. Maybe we’ll see some of you there.
