Date: October 6, 2012

Score:3 - 0

Event Recap:
(25-23; 25-13; 25-13)

On SAT Saturday, the Bears faced the Wildcats of The Williston Northampton School for the second time in a two-week period, and with the support of a raucous, positive crowd Berkshire prevailed 3-0. Set one was a contentious affair with each squad determined to maintain momentum and the lead. After the Wildcats took an early lead, Katie Stonecipher ’15 provided three aces to make it 5-4 Bears. The teams then proceeded to exchange side outs and short scoring runs so that Berkshire used kills by Katie Moffett ’12, Maddy Maher ’12, Katie Stonecipher, and Samone Defreese ’15 to lead 14-11 at the start of the second service rotation. Of course, the Wildcats responded to tie the score 14-14, and the squads engaged in another round of side outs. With Williston leading 19-18, a Wildcat serving error brought co-captain Caitlin Kiene ’13 to the service line. Caitlin, with three sharp serves, seemed to put the Bears firmly in control of the set at 22-19. We reached set point at 24-21; however, Williston earned the next two points to trail by one at 23-24. Finally, Samone’s block sealed a 25-23 win for the Bears.

Set two saw the Wildcats again take an early lead (6-3) with an ace, a couple of kills, and three unforced errors by the Bears. The Bears, fueled by three kills from Maddy Maher and nice serving from Krissy Goversten ’15, forged ahead 11-6 at this point. Another kill by Maddy and good serves by Caitlin then increased our advantage to 15-7. Two kills by Katie S., one from Samone, and an ace by Eliza Berg ’13 highlighted a run that made the score 21- 8 in favor of the Bears. After a swap of side outs, two aces by Nicole Martinez ’16 brought us to set point at 24-9. Once again the Wildcats refused to go quietly and rallied until a Williston service error ended the set 25-13.

In set three, the play of Caitlin (2 kills; 2 aces) and Katie S. (2 service points and nice defense) allowed the Bears to keep pace with the Wildcats. With consistent serving by Eliza B. and kills from Maddy, Katie S., and Samone, the Bears gained the momentum in the set and led 15-8 when Nicole served to start the second round of service. Four serves later (2 aces) the Bears led 19-8. That quickly became 22-9 following a Wildcat serving error and two aces by Katie S. An exchange of side outs followed that ended with a kill by Maddy that closed out a 25-13 win for Berkshire.

Today’s match saw the Bears adjust to a shift in the starting lineup. Although we have work to do, the squad is developing a sense of cohesion on the court as the players become more comfortable with each other and with our substitution pattern. For one, Maddy Maher returned to the starting lineup and contributed with seven kills. In addition, Samone Defreese, who is becoming quite comfortable at the net, supplied an ace, a block, and six kills. Katie S. is a complete player who combined solid defense with six aces and four kills. Nicole Martinez ran an effective attack (12 assists) and chipped in with four aces while Caitlin passed well, hit intelligently (5 kills), and served bullets (6 aces). Eliza B., with the encouragement a large number of family and friends, was rock solid on the service line and hustled on defense. Katie Moffett was a presence on the right side and garnered Moose for her hustle and positive play today. Bear went to Krissy Goversten who had a very good day at the service line and on defense.

We want to thank our fans for their cheers and the Bergs for the post-match goodies. The team will now get ready to play the Wildcats of The Ethel Walker School on Wednesday, October 10 on the Duryee Varsity Court at 2:30 p.m.
