Captains: Greta Dorsey ’14 & Ayse Kesaf ‘14
Berkshire School’s volleyball program, started in 1980, is a member of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (N.E.P.S.A.C.). Moving from the winter to the fall season in 2009, Berkshire has continued its tradition of being a competitive volleyball program. As such, the Bears were Class B New England Tournament semifinalists in 2009 and quarter-finalists in 2011.
Berkshire fields teams at the varsity and junior varsity levels each year and plays a rigorous schedule against independent schools in southern New England. As a medium-sized member of the New England Prep School Fall Girls Volleyball Association, our rigorous schedule includes Class B schools, such as The Ethel Walker School, Canterbury School, Suffield Academy, Wilbraham and Monson Academy, The Williston Northampton School, and Kingswood-Oxford School, as well as Class A opponents The Hotchkiss School, The Taft School, Greenwich Academy, and Northfield Mount Hermon School.
Over the past thirty-two years, the volleyball program has emphasized team play and tenacious defense. In addition to pursuing careers in fields such as medicine, education, finance, engineering, acting, fashion design and the armed forces in life beyond Berkshire, players have participated in programs at schools such as Emory University, Williams College, St. Lawrence University, Wheaton College, Dickinson College, and Western Maryland College.
Despite a 4-8 record last fall, the 2013 squad returns a solid core of players. Co-captains Greta Dorsey ’14 and Elif Kesaf ’14 will provide leadership while Sydney Beldock ’14 is poised to claim a starting role. 2012 league all-star Katie Stonecipher ’15, reliable Krissy Goversten ‘15 and super sophomore Samone DeFreese ’16 will anchor the squad defensively and offensively. With the infusion of a few players from the 2012 junior varsity squad and from students who are new to Berkshire, the 2014 varsity will endeavor to garner a place in the New England tournament and most importantly, have fun doing so.
