The Bears hosted The Taft School for their 2013 home opener. Berkshire came ready to play and quickly put together some great combination play in the middle of the field that sprung Keunna Dill '14 who tapped in the ball to beat the sprawling Taft goalie. Ana Alvarenga '15 got the assist on Berkshire's first goal of the season. The Bears were able to score two more goals before the end of the first half. Dill turned and took a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net and then newcomer Sophie Roberts '16 was in the right place off a cross and put a shot on net. The Taft keeper made the original save, but Roberts showed some composure and placed the ball in the corner of the goal. Taft picked up the pressure in the last part of the first half, but the back line was able to keep the shutout. Molly Crabtree '15 played an exceptional game in the backfield, battling for balls on the wing against Taft's talented strikers.
Taft came to play in the second half and quickly scored to cut Berkshire's lead to two goals. The Bears responded with a through ball sent by Olivia Jansing '16 that Dill was able to touch and finish for her third goal of the contest. Taft continued to pressure and scored off a quality 25 yard shot to once again cut the lead to two. Berkshire picked up their play and had several more quality chances in front of the net late in the second half, and the defense did a solid job of shutting down the Rhinos in the remaining minutes. Cam Biasin '14 had another fine day in net, reading the play well and making several athletic saves off set pieces.
Berkshire now has a string of away games, starting with Ethel Walker on Wednesday. Thanks again for all of the fan support on Saturday and we hope to see you in Simsbury!
