New England Quarterfinal

Date: November 14, 2012

Score:3 - 0

Event Recap:

Berkshire hosted Choate today in the New England Class A Quarterfinals, and it proved to be a very good match. At the start of the match, the play shifted back and forth for a few minutes, and then Berkshire opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Zeiko Lewis '13 broke free on the wing and delivered a great cross onto the foot of a streaking Justin Donawa '15 who hammered in the first goal of the match. Just three minutes later, Lewis '13 again connected with Donawa '15 for another beautiful goal.  Up 2-0 in in the 8th minute, the Bears were off to a great start.  Following the first two goals, the tempo of the match changed as both teams moved the ball well and defended effectively. Berkshire nearly broke free twice more and nearly added to their lead.  First it was Jack Harrison '15 who made a great run between two defenders and received a ball from Lewis '13, and his impressive strike beat the keeper but hit the post and sailed out of bounds. Moments later Tony Amolo '13 sliced through Choate's defense and was confronted by a sliding keeper from Choate. Amolo touched the ball by the keeper, but was bumped along the way. Stumbling, he managed to keep his footing and strike the ball, but the ball was cleared off the goal line by a great defensive effort by one of Choate's defenders. Up 2-0 at halftime, Berkshire knew they would need a great second half to finish out the match.

In the second half, Berkshire controlled much of the possession, but Choate proved to be dangerous in the counter attacking situations. Berkshire again came close a couple of times, but Choate's back line and keeper did well holding off Berkshire's attack. Halfway through the half, Choate got its best chance when a ball bounced behind the back line and Choate's striker skillfully tipped the ball over Berkshire's oncoming keeper, but Brandon Allen '13 raced back toward the ball and caught up to it just in time to make a bicycle-kick clearance off the line.  It was truly an incredible effort by Allen to keep Choate off the board.  Moments later Berkshire would find the much needed 3rd goal when Zeiko Lewis '13 was fouled on a break into the box.  Lewis '13 stepped to the penalty spot and drilled the ball into the back netting.  This proved to be the final goal of the match.

A solid 3-0 victory for the Bears felt good, but it was not Berkshire's best outing to date.  Berkshire will look to improve in the next two practices before they host #4 Kent in the NE Quarterfinals, which will be held at Berkshire on Saturday at 2:00 PM. The Bears improved to 17-0-1 on the season.

Please come out support the Bears on Saturday!
