In a rare Sunday match, Berkshire played on the road against Northfield Mount Hermon. It was the first time in a long time that Berkshire has had a match with NMH, so it was an exciting day for both teams. Coming off a disappointing tie with Hotchkiss on Friday, Berkshire looked to play a full 90 minutes and try and claim an important road win against one of the toughest teams in New England. From the start it seemed the Bears were ready to play as they moved the ball well around the field and generated some dangerous attacking sequences. While NMH did not have as much of the ball, they defended well and countered well testing the back four from Berkshire several times. In the 15th minute, Berkshire found the net when Jack Harrison '15 slotted a perfect ball through NMH's back line onto the foot of Zeiko Lewis '13 who eluded the oncoming rush by NMH's keeper and then tucked the ball in the back of the net. Following the goal, Berkshire continued to do a good job in possession while also fending off NMH's forays into Berkshire territory. Just eight minutes after the first goal, Berkshire found the net again when Zeiko Lewis '13 served a great ball across the box onto the foot of Tony Amolo '13 who skillfully one-timed the cross into the back of the NMH's net. The half was far from over though, as NMH started to press the Bears hard looking to close the gap. Berkshire's back line of Justin Donawa '15, Nate Summers '14, Brandon Allen '13 and Noah Sinkoff '13 and keeper Bryan Gerstenfeld '14 stood up the pressure well and managed to keep the home side off the scoreboard. At the half, Berkshire led NMH by a score of 2-0.
In the second half, the Bears wanted to come out quickly and try and put the game further out of reach for NMH, and fortunately another great connection between Jack Harrison '15 and Zeiko Lewis '13 allowed the Bears to take a 3-0 lead. This time Harrison freed himself on the wing and delivered a perfect ball onto Lewis's foot. At close range facing only the keeper, Lewis made sure of his finish, netting his second goal of the afternoon. Following the third goal, Berkshire continued to possess the ball well and create good attacking moments. Jack Harrison '15 nearly made it four when he beat his man on top of the box and ripped a shot off the post. Though both teams would come close on several occasions, the score did not change and the final was 3-0 for Berkshire.
It was a great team effort today, and Berkshire played its most complete effort to date. Haden Cosman '13 and Luis Echeverria '13 worked well in combination in the middle and Tanner Tomasi '14 did a great job patrolling the central midfield and linking the layers. Berkshire's two outside backs, Noah Sinkoff '13 and Justin Donawa '15 were very good defensively and made great contributions on the attacking end. In his third start in goal, Bryan Gerstenfeld '14 was great again making all the necessary stops and dominating his box. It was a great day for Berkshire as all members of the team got to play and the team earned a great victory over a very talented team from NMH.
Up next, Berkshire plays on the road at Kent on Wednesday, September 26th at 3:00 PM.
