Soccer - Boys Varsity vs. Wilbraham

Event Type: Regular

Date: September 19, 2012

Score:3 - 0

Event Recap:

Berkshire was on the road again today, and they met a tough and competitive side from Wilbraham & Monson. With three starters out with injuries, the Bears would need an inspired performance from some of its reserves to claim an important road win.  The game opened well for Bears and they controlled much of the early possession and generated some fine scoring chances.  The best chance early in the match came when Matt Renzi '13 got on the end of cross and hit a rocket of shot that was stopped by a good save from Wilbraham's keeper.  The ensuing rebound was headed off the cross bar by Tony Amolo '13.  Later in the half Zeiko Lewis '13 played a great ball onto the feet of Justin Donawa '15 who turned the corner nicely around his defender but his shot sailed wide of the goal.  Noah Sinkoff '13 almost scored twice but both times the Wilbraham's keeper was well positioned and made the saves. With continued pressure the Bears eventually took the lead when a Berkshire cross was deflected by Wilbraham defender and fell into the back of the net.  Following this goal, the Bears were unable to secure a much needed insurance goal, and during this time Wilbraham built up some good pressure of its own. For the final minutes of the half, Berkshire did a good job fending off Wilbraham who seemed keen to equalize.

In the second half, the game opened up with some good end to end action for both teams.  However, both teams managed to fend of the pressure and keep the score the same.  In goal for the Bears, Bryan Gerstenfeld '14 was focused and made several alert stops.  The back line of Noah Sinkoff '13, Brandon Allen '13, Nate Summers '14, and Matt Renzi '13 and holding midfielder Luis Echeverria '13 kept the home side off the scoreboard despite their persistence and continued pressure. The Bears countered well at times, but forced things a bit too much and were unable to find the security goal.  The intensity of the match escalated as the play shifted quickly back and forth.  Late in the half Anthony Amolo '13 found Zeiko Lewis '13 on an angled run, and Lewis streaked into the goal where his first shot was blocked but he tapped in the rebound giving the Bears the 2-0 lead.  Moments later, Amolo found Lewis again, and Lewis beat the last defender and slid the ball skillfully past the Wilbraham keeper for his second goal of the match.

It was a gritty win for the Bears who were playing without some key players. It was great to see some of the reserves step into starting roles and handle the pressure so well.  The Bears have opened the season well with two quality wins over very good opponents, and now on Friday the team looks to extend its run when Hotchkiss comes to town for a rematch of last year's New England Class A Quarterfinal match, one in which the Bears lost 1-3 to the eventual champions.  Berkshire aims to reverse the result this year in front of a good home crowd.  The match starts at 4:45 PM.
