“In this painting, an advertisement for “Phillies Cigars – only $.05” appears. Light streams through the one illuminated window onto the street beyond, rendered in an impasto style. Two men in fedoras sit at the diner counter next to a woman in a red dress. What is this 1942 iconic painting by Edward Hopper?
Did you guess Nighthawks? Because the Berkshire Quiz Bowl team did, earning 10 points in the first round of their first event of the academic year, the MIT Invitational Beaver Academic Tournament (MITBAT), hosted by the university on Saturday, September 21, 2013. Three Berkshire students traveled to Cambridge, including Captain Merit Glover (’14), Shuvam Chakraborty (’16), and Noah Faison (’16). Despite being down one player, the team did very well, qualifying for the play-offs after an impressive 4 – 2 record in the preliminary rounds. Although there was some tough competition in the second half of the day, the Bears finished with a 6 – 4 record, in 14th place (out of 28) overall. Individually, Merit finished in 29th place, followed by Shuvam in 38th and rookie Noah in 82th, out of 119 competitors in total. It was a great beginning to the academic competition year!
After the tournament concluded, the team was lucky to tour the MIT Media Lab (www.media.mit.edu), one of the most elite research and design units at the university, and indeed, in the world. Toured by PhD candidate (and former student of Coach Evan Clary) Xiao Xiao, the Berkshire team got a unique look into STEM research projects not typically available to the public. While we cannot describe the nature of the work, suffice to say, the Berkshire students were both impressed and inspired!
