Mountain Biking
The mountain bike team has its very own 7-mile single track trail
with all sorts of surprises. Some sections are very moderate with all
the rock and root outcrops one would expect from a New England
landscape. Others are laden with more technical challenges including
drop-offs, berms, river crossings, and man-made obstacles. It has long,
uphill grinds with some very rewarding downhill. The terrain is varied
and interesting.
No experience is necessary to join the team, just a commitment to
improve. The RKMP outfits a bike room with a full array of tools for
bike maintenance. The team makes use of the weight room for strength
training. It rides through the very scenic Berkshire landscape on road
bikes (supplied by the RMKP) for endurance training. It even has its own
technical riding park for technique training (centralized area with
lots and lots of obstacles).
Finally, the team tests its progress by racing in the Root 66
Mountain Bike Race Series. Root 66 hosts races throughout New England.
Racers are split by ability (beginners, sport, expert, and professional)
and by age. The team also goes on at least one trip to other mountain
bike areas such as the Arcadia Management Area in RI, the Trail of Tears
in Cape Cod, or the Foxboro State Park near Boston, MA.
