The twenty-one students who presented their Independent Study projects on Thursday evening were an energetic and enthusiastic group. They were also masters of their topics, which ranged from philosophical questions about free will to scientific explorations of symbiotic relationships between hydroponic plants and goldfish. Students in Linda Bellizzi's Advanced English IV class took their study of Jhumpa Lahiri's "Namesake" and the Indian immigrant experience to a delicious new level when Suzanne Mazzarelli, mother of Arwen Neski '15, treated the class to an early-morning feast.

Students in two IV Form English classes made a sweet connection to Berkshire's history when they read "Sugar Weather" by legendary Berkshire teacher Art Chase, then wrote their own syrup-inspired poems after a visit to Chase Sugaring House to witness the process first-hand. Junior Nim Farhood is one of twelve students in a new English elective entitled College Writing. Juniors and seniors in the course, working in a variety of genres -- from personal narratives to theater reviews to expository essays -- and via a wide range of media -- including blogs and google documents and wikispaces -- pursue each project through multiple steps. The goal of the course is to prepare these avid writers for the myriad challenges that they will encounter throughout their collegiate experience.

Dr. Kohlhepp will lead a discussion about Shakespeare's Hamlet, as part of the Center for Writing and Critical Thinking Seminar Series. This presentation is well-timed for seniors who will be reading, then performing, the tragedy this month in English classes.

Juniors in Advanced English have been reading texts about material excess and a perceived moral bankruptcy of modern society. Some have taken advantage of the opportunity to reflect on these issues on an overnight sojourn in the School's Thoreau Cabin replica.

The Center for Writing and Critical Thinking has expanded its hours, trained a new slate of student mentors, and moved its base of operation into Berkshire Hall. With English, History and Science teachers available to help, and a new seminar series launched, CWCT continues to be an important academic resource.

Unyime Udoh '13 focused a love of architecture on an intensive study of Le Corbusier in the Advanced Humanities Research class. She has found the study of his prolific canon and complex personality a fascinating intellectual pursuit, and has debunked her preconceived notions of research in the process.
