What excites you the most about teaching at Berkshire? The is a piece of Berkshire lore floating around that the school's founder, Mr. Buck, built our main academic building, Berkshire Hall, under the brow of a mountain so that the community could look out and go out into the world with the supportive embrace of the mountain and school behind each individual. Berkshire, for me, is a place where teachers, students, faculty, and families can experience a world of opportunity at a school that challenges yet supports one another.
What type of students do you encounter at Berkshire? I am frequently asked what is THE Berkshire student. While we have a wide variety of abilities here at Berkshire, the one thing all Berkshire students, whether they are the top math student in the world or a C student, share is they like to work hard and they are interested.
What is your favorite tradition at Berkshire? I love Hamlet Night, a night when the entire VI Form reenacts Shakespeare’s Hamlet. I love it because it is incredible to see students motivated to write, interpret, and perform a challenging play, and it is especially exciting to see kids, who have never formally acted or even been on stage, rise to the occasion and achieve heights they never before thought possible. The most I have ever learned as a teacher has been garnered from my students during observing them work through and on Hamlet Night.
How would you describe the Berkshire community? Life is busy at Berkshire, but every day is an adventure and a gift.
