Where does your passion for teaching come from? Everyday in the classroom, I am reminded of my own experience in boarding school around the Harkness Table. There are magical moments in the classroom when there are no students, no teachers, just engaged people sharing ideas and perspectives. I love it when my students take the class in its own direction.
What excites you the most about teaching at Berkshire? I love the different perspectives that Berkshire students bring to the classroom. Every class presents an opportunity for my students to share their ideas that blends their own personal experiences with their interpretation of the readings and assignments.
How do you see yourself preparing the students for school and for life? My job as a teacher/coach/adviser is to listen well and to find a way for my students to live in the here and now. Life is a minefield for 14-19 year olds. As a former teenager who experienced that same minefield, I aspire to be that voice of suggestion that might help find that tricky left hand when times are tough.
What is your favorite tradition at Berkshire? I love how comfortable students and faculty are with one another and how often we all interact during the course of our days under the mountain. Our culture promotes healthy and frequent conversations that develops into lasting relationships that continue well after they receive their diplomas.
