Today at an all-school assembly, Isabelle Maher and Mo Omar were named All-School Presidents for the 2017-18 school year. It was the first time the School has elected co-presidents, the result of a proposal submitted by current All-School President Jensen Hellmers and the Student Government, recommending the election of both a female and a male representative from the rising sixth-form class.
Head of School Pieter Mulder thanked the six candidates who ran for office for the, "thoughtfulness and principled nature" of their remarks. "The candidates represented our school and our community powerfully," he said, "leaving us knowing that, whatever the outcome, the School will be in very good hands."
In her candidacy, Izzy emphasized her ability to be an active resource for the community's ideas and perspectives, and her belief in the School's core values and her commitment to upholding them in her everyday life. "Sometimes a leader's job is to simply listen and take the time to understand," she said. She hopes to help lead Berkshire by giving students "permission to be themselves by being myself."
Mo ran on a platform that included revising the dress code for greater equity, reimagining Sunday morning study hall, and creating a merit-based Student-of-the-Month program to highlight the accomplishments of the student body. "The Berkshire School community has welcomed me with open arms since my first day," he said, "and I feel it is now my duty to make other people's experiences as memorable as mine."
In addition to her new role, Izzy is a member of Ursa Minor (girls a cappella group), the Natural Helpers club and performs in Berkshire's theater productions. Mo is a member of the boys soccer and track teams, a Green Key (tour guides) leader and has been active in student government.
