Berkshire’s glistening new multi-purpose athletic facility now has a name: the Jackman L. Stewart Athletic Center, in tribute to legendary athletic director and hockey and soccer coach Jack Stewart.
The name will be formally announced on January 31 during dedication ceremonies, at which Mr. Stewart’s widow, Elly, and other family members will join trustees, alumni, faculty, students and parents.
Jack Stewart, who worked at Berkshire from 1956 to 1990 and who died in 2000, was athletic director from 1963 to 1980 and from 1983 to 1986. He
racked up 170 wins in 21 years as boys’ hockey coach, 195 wins in 19 years as boys’ soccer coach, and 53 wins in six years as girls’ soccer coach.
In recognition of Mr. Stewart’s service to Berkshire, the Western New England Preparatory Soccer Association named its league’s tournament trophy The Stewart Cup. In 1989, Berkshire’s trustees voted to name the boys’ varsity soccer field The Stewart Pitch, which the new athletic center overlooks. Every fall, the Jackman L. Stewart Award is presented to that Berkshire boy and girl soccer player who best exemplifies the spirit of Berkshire soccer.
