Girls' Crew Kicks-Off Season in Tampa

Berkshire's Girls' crew spent a wonderful week in warm and sunny Tampa, FL over spring break, getting in lots of miles on the waters of the Hillsborough River and Tampa Bay, eating plenty of food at the University of Tampa dining hall, and having some fun adventures along the way. 12 girls made the trip to Tampa, the team's seventh annual visit to this crew spring training mecca.

Along with Berkshire's boys' team, the girls were joined at the boathouse by teams from Kent School, Hamilton College, Drake University, Salisbury School, and Colgate University.  It all made for a great atmosphere for training.

For returning members of the team, the trip is a great time to get back into the swing of rowing after a year away.  For novices, Tampa is an ideal location to learn the basics of the sport.  Each day featured two on-water practices, as well as some conditioning work on dry land. The team endured one afternoon of thunderstorms and torrential downpours that kept them off the water, but otherwise enjoyed sunny weather with temperatures in the 70s.

We saw dolphins, rowed by Derek Jeter's waterfront mansion, attended a Tampa Bay Lightning game, and all got shark tattoos.  Another highlight of the week was the chance to re-connect with former Bear Maddy Maher, '13, who earned a seat in the varsity boat at Hamilton College.  All in all, it was another great year in Tampa, and the coaches are already looking forward to next year's trip.
