May 13: JUNIOR VARSITY vs. Indian Mountain School - With a squad of younger players, Berkshire took to Indian Mountain School and earned their first win of the season with a score of 8-4. The Bears offense got off to a quick start, plating four runs in the top of the first inning, and steady pitching from third formers Max Rhie '20 (4.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 Ks) and Shun Iwata '20 (3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 Ks) helped them keep the lead all the way through. The Bears have continued to make improvements in the quality of their defense, with good plays being made all around the infield and outfield. Defensive highlights included a ranging catch in center field by Jackson Chapin '20, a very tricky put-out at first after a dropped third strike by catcher Henry Kessler '19, and solid plays on ground balls at both short and second by Patrick Fulling '19 and Tyler Swirbul '19.

GIRLS LACROSSE

May 8: VARSITY vs. Millbrook - The Bears hosted Millbrook, and it was clear that both teams have come a long way since our scrimmage at the end of March. Berkshire took the lead early on with two snipers from Layla Tattersfield '18 in the first 4 minutes. Jaime Allan '18 would follow up with her bread-and-butter crease roll, and a hard take from Chase Landis '18 from the top solidified the lead 4-0 where it hung out for the next 10 minutes. Tattersfield would tally twice more, both within a minute. Berkshire's offense showed great discipline in the last 2 minutes of the half, possessing the ball until the perfect moment - a savvy challenge from Katie Hargrave '18, who buried it with 30 seconds to go. Millbrook kept the Bears on their toes in the second half, scoring five goals with solid passing and a fast break that caught our defense sleeping. Nonetheless we saw some terrific defensive plays from goalie Maggie Curran '17 who for the third time this season made a save and beat everyone to the end line off the rebound to regain possession, and Maggie Markgraf '17 who scooped up 5 ground balls and received the fewest numbers of fouls in any game she's played so far. Erin Dillon '17 also had an impressive 5 draw controls, keeping us competitive on the circle.

May 13: VARSITY vs. Gunnery - The Bears strung together a beautiful team effort in a 15-4 win versus Gunnery on Friday evening with goals from eight different players, including Erin Dillon '18 with her first varsity career goal. Dillon also stepped up for us on the draw control to help battle Gunnery's #19 Catherine Lawrence, who won six draws. Chase Landis '18 led the offense with six goals and one assist, and Layla Tattersfield '18 and Katie Hargrave '18 each had 2 goals, and multiple draw controls and ground balls. The most memorable moment came at the beginning of the first half with a save from Maggie Curran '17 who sent out one of her poetic clears past the restraining line, and the midfielders zigzagged the ball down the pitch, stringing together multiple crisp, beeline passes before finding Emma Wynne '20 on the crease who faked and placed her shot low with confidence and poise. Once again every player was able to contribute significant time out on the field, and we met our goals of winning both halves, and denying goals from the other team in the final 2 minutes of each half.
