GIRLS CREW

April 22: VARSITY vs. Taft / Choate - Girls crew opened the 2017 season with their annual home race against Choate and Taft. It was cool and breezy at Camp Sloane, but a great crowd of parents and grandparents came out to support the team. The third boat, comprised of Charlotte Billingsley '20, Charlotte Schulze '18, Marietta Riebling '18, Aisha Abdrashitova '18, and Michelle Wang '20, had a strong start but were up against more seasoned competitors. They fought bravely and gained valuable experience in their first 1500 meter race. Second boat, with a mix of experienced and novice rowers with Ashley Scott '18, Hannah Weymuller '18, Kenzie Licata '19, Cat Quaintance '17, and Tess Haskel '20, handled the rough conditions well, but fell to the superior speed of the Boars and the Rhinos. Finally, Devon Thompson '19, Elizabeth Rowland '19, Cat Appleyard '20, Cami Kittredge '19, and Lulu Kauffman '17 in the first boat were able to hang with the competition for the first 500 meters, but could not keep up with the other boats through the wind. While the results were disappointing, the experience gained will be valuable as we head to Pomfret on Wednesday.

GOLF

April 22: JUNIOR VARSITY vs. Westminster School - On a cool overcast Saturday afternoon, the Bears JV golf team took on Westminster School. Led by captain Ben Dixon '17, the team battled hard during their first match of the season. Highlights included a round of 42 by Dixon and Xander Tillou '18. Westminster came away with the victory with a final score of 212-228

GIRLS LACROSSE

April 22: VARSITY vs. Suffield Academy - After an exciting week at Berkshire, the Bears focused their efforts for a 16-8 win over Suffield. With a consistent offensive presence, Berkshire moved the ball with confidence and patience around the 12m, and created lots of scoring opportunities with off-ball movement and feeds. Half of the goals scored on Saturday were assisted, an unusual stat for high school lacrosse, where goals tend to result from 1v1 and free position goals. On offense, Berkshire had six different goal scorers: Chase Landis '18 had a season high five goals and one assist, Katie Hargrave '18 had a hat trick and an assist, and Jaime Allan '18 also netted three. Ione Bartlett '17 buried two, Elsie Harrington '19 had a goal and an assist, and Holley Riva '19 and Emma Wynne '20 had two assists each. Layla Tattersfield '18 had two goals and dominated in the midfield with five draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Once again, Maggie Curran '17 came up with some huge saves, including an impressive interception on a Suffield free position in the second half. Our Player of the Game was Erin "Pickle" Dillon '17 who scooped up six ground balls and energized our transition game from the backfield.

SOFTBALL

April 19: VARSITY vs. Miss Hall's - Berkshire softball picked up their first league win of the season at Miss Hall's. The team was led once again by outstanding pitching from Gracie Kraft '17. Gracie allowed only one earned run and struck out five batters. On the offensive side, Berkshire was led by Grace Federle '18 who reached base in all four plate appearances and scored two runs. Jeanna Willis '17 and Jordan Bernier '18 also helped drive the Berkshire attack, both adding inside-the-park home runs.

April 22: VARSITY vs. Suffield Academy - Berkshire dropped a home game to Suffield Academy. Gracie Kraft '17 did a great job on the mound but defensive miscues led to many unearned runs. Jeanna Willis '17 did a great job at shortstop and continues to improve. At the plate, the Bears were led by Grace Federle '18 and Jordan Bernier '18, who hit a fourth inning solo home run.

BOYS TENNIS

April 19: VARSITY vs. Williston Northampton School - With the weather refusing to cooperate, the Bears traveled up I-90 to Williston Northampton with the hopes to play their match before more rain came. WNH is a young and extremely talented team. The Bears knew they would have to rely on experience and strength. The doubles point provided three different case studies. Tyler Morse '17 and Harry Green '20 pressured their opponents with great net play and angled shots to win. Quentin van der Lee '17 and Mikey Petersen '17 weathered the first game to find their groove s with powerful groundstrokes and accuracy. Tanner Boyle '17 and Charlie Boyle '17 fought off unforced errors and righted the ship by the end. In the singles portion, all the Bears saw how talented the WNH team really is. In all six spots, the Bears had to battle back from being down at some point. Morse continued his fine day by applying lots of pressure to his opponent with his drop shots and net play. Van der Lee and Green demonstrated fine tactics and cruised in their second sets. Boyle and Boyle had to find their range and play with more energy to secure their victories.
