Head of School Announcement

November 4, 2013

Head of School
To the Berkshire School Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Head of School Search Committee, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Pieter M. Mulder as the sixteenth Head of School, effective November 1, 2013.

Following an extensive six-month national search, the Search Committee recommended, and the Board of Trustees unanimously endorsed, our Interim Head of School as uniquely qualified to lead Berkshire into the next decade of its continued success.

Throughout Pieter’s distinguished nine-year career at Berkshire, he has done an outstanding job in any and all roles asked of him—Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of College Counseling, and most recently stepping in as Interim Head of School since April of this year. We are confident in both his commitment to academic excellence and his inclusive vision to position Berkshire as a distinctive and powerful educational experience for our students. Under Pieter’s leadership, Berkshire is poised to embrace all facets of 21st century learning, to broaden diversity as reflected in our global world, and to build upon its rich history. We are so excited to be working with Pieter to fulfill these goals and to formally welcome him and Lucia as stewards of Berkshire School.

Pieter responded to his appointment as Head of School sharing, “I am thrilled and honored by the opportunity to lead Berkshire forward. Lucia shares this excitement equally. I believe powerfully and passionately in the mission of the School, and I will continue to work tirelessly to inspire the strongest commitment of our entire community. We are all so fortunate to be a part of this tremendous school and to work with such talented young people during this transformational time in their lives. Together, we will make our great school even greater.”

We offer our sincere appreciation to the Berkshire alumni, parents (both current and past), faculty, staff, and students, as well as other friends of the School, who contributed meaningfully to the search process. You graciously welcomed our candidates, served as wonderful representatives of our community, and provided the Search Committee with invaluable insight, perspective, and feedback. The community was served exceptionally well by the entire Search Committee, and we thank them for their time and dedication in this important endeavor. I would also like to thank the elected administration, faculty and staff representatives: Anita Loose-Brown, Andy Kay, Wil Smith, and Jasper Turner for their leadership and tireless efforts on top of their existing School responsibilities.

Please join me in congratulating Pieter and Lucia and their family in their new role under the Mountain. I look forward to all we will accomplish under Pieter’s leadership as Berkshire’s next Head of School.

Sincerely,

Stephen  P. Norman ’60
Chair, Board of Trustees
